NAME: Edna (Hephsin Yulind)
AGE: 1,000+
CANON: Tales of Zestiria
NAME: Edna (Hephsin Yulind)
AGE: 1,000+
CANON: Tales of Zestiria
CANON HISTORY:
Edna | Zestiria
To elaborate on Edna's early history; she was raised by and had lived with her brother all of her life atop the mountain where Sorey and his friends first met her. Because of the location and their Seraphim background, the two were isolated from humans as well as many other Seraphim. Being invisible to most all humans, as humans lost their faith, Edna and her brother Eizen also lost faith in humans. And when she was old enough, Eizen left her on that mountain to join Aifreed's pirates; something that filled her with bitterness and loneliness. Despite the fact that his presence brought bad luck and danger, she'd wanted nothing more than to be able to live by his side. She didn't have anywhere else to go and instead lived sadly on that mountain, with only his letters and gifts to tell her what or how he was doing. However, in time Edna's brother ultimately became a corrupted being-- losing his sense of self and becoming a terrible, fearsome dragon. It turned their mountain into a place few traveled and many gossiped about. And yet even though he became unreachable-- even though he'd abandoned her for so many years-- Edna wouldn't leave him or that accursed mountain.
She continued to live on the mountain, although she was at risk as much as anyone else. At first she'd hoped he could be saved, but in time she lost that hope. Part of her blamed humanity for her brother's change-- and part of her blamed herself for being unable to save him. Even so, she held on to her strength until the day that Sorey and his group climbed the mountain looking for her assistance in fighting the Lord of Calamity-- the human spreading chaos and malevolence all across their world. Sorey insisted that they could look for a way to save her brother and she became a part of their team. Not just because of her brother, but also because part of her wanted to go. Malevolence was what ruined her brother, she'd stop the Lord of Calamity at any cost.
Edna is with the party for the better part of the game; the third of the five Seraphim to work with their party. She builds them a bridge to enter Marlind before Alisha leaves their group and remains until the very end.
CANON PERSONALITY: At first glance, Edna allows herself to come off as apathetic and harsh. Years of solitude played a big part in her social awkwardness. For a very longtime the only real companion she had was her brother - and when he turned into a dragon she was essentially left alone. Naturally she was very lonely and even resented her brother a little for leaving her that way. But she also displays great bravery and loyalty - not caring about the grave danger she's in while she remains near her corrupted brother, choosing to remain on the mountain with him despite the fact that he could have easily killed her and would have in that state. Naturally she was stubborn - fighting Sorey's group's attempts to have her join their party despite the fact that deep down there was a part of her that wanted to go... to not be alone anymore. But she was battling her own feelings of love and responsibility for her brother. No matter what he'd done, she didn't want to leave him alone, even though she had felt certain there was no way to save him. Or at the very least for all she had searched for many years, she'd never found any.
When she concedes, she makes it clear that her reasons for doing so are not noble ones pertaining to the state of the world or the Lord of Calamity. Edna, who had built up dislike and distrust towards humanity - who lost their faith in the Seraphim, corrupted the world and created the Lord of Calamity, and in her mind were responsible for her brother's corruption in that manner as well, saw something different in Sorry and his companion Alisha. They had traits and goals and outlooks worthy of respect, perhaps. Naturally she didn't know what to make of the strange group at first but she's immediately curious. On top of that the Shepherd takes a personal interest in her brother's condition and offers to help her look for a way to save him, saying that maybe now... maybe with all of them working together they can find something that she missed. Whether it's true or not, he gave her hope. He proved that he was indeed different from most humans.
This is where Edna's growth begins. Seeing the world with Sorry and his group is an experience unlike any she'd had in her long life. Her brother had always protected her, leaving her behind when he went out on his journeys. This time however, she was able to spread her wings. She was a valued and necessary part of their team. They needed her. And that felt good. She never sheds her apathetic tone or direct manner of speaking. She doesn't make a habit of outwardly expressing the changing feelings going on inside of her. Edna plays it cool. The Earth Seraph makes it look like she's keeping a certain amount of distance between herself and the people and situations around her ninety percent of the time, while at the same time displaying a troll-like playful nature and earning herself the impression of being the type of person whom you shouldn't take the things they say at face value, as Zaveid is happy to point out.
And it's true. She greatly enjoys teasing certain members of the group - primarily Mikleo, Alisha and Rose or more specifically the types who will either be riled up by it or who are too gullible for their own good and fall for her tricks. Her brand of teasing includes everything from clever nicknames to made-up dances or disgusting methods of meal preparation to the very literal poking and prodding of others with her umbrella. She has a lot of methods but truthfully it's just one of the ways she interacts with the people she really likes. It says that she finds them interesting.
But in battle she's all about winning and although she has some witty one liners ready at all times, she's all about being prepared and protecting her allies. She has no intentions of letting her friends be hurt or being the reason a monster catches them off guard. Travelling with them meant seeing the best and the worst of humanity, but seeing how her friends Sorry, Alisha and Rose coped with the bad and responded with goodness, she found her own confidence in humanity. They were still stupid and weak and there would always be ugly humans - but she was also able to see the part of humanity that was worth protecting.
The fact that she spent so much time alone developed strong senses of independence and maturity in her. She dislikes being treated like a child, even when it was her brother who did it. Especially because her brother treated her that way she wanted to be and be seen as a strong, self-sufficient and grown up woman. It's not in her nature to easily or seriously go looking for help from others if she can manage on her own, however she has learned to rely on friends and allies when she truly needs it. But that comes with faith and trust - things that need to be earned with her, even if that's not as difficult a task as it once was. But on the flip-side the same early maturity and independence she developed also left her with a bit of selfishness buried inside of her.
Although she has a bit of a tsundere approach to relationships, Edna does get deeply attached to those she comes to know and trust over time. All fooling aside, she wants to be liked and trusted in return. She doesn't want to worry them over her but at the same time she is willing to sacrifice her delicate body blasting boulders out of the way. That's why she asks to keep her pains secret from people like Sorey who would be upset - because she cares about their feelings.
SKILLS/ABILITIES: Edna is a Seraph-- a being that is spiritual in nature and are invisible to most humans. Humans typically lack something they call "resonance". But a lot more people used to be able to-- what happened was people stopped believing. And the less they believed the less they became capable of connecting with them.
The abilities that come with her being an Earth Seraph are supernatural strength-- her contribution to the group when they're exploring the map is her ability to crush boulders that are standing in the party's way with her bare hands.
Her special abilities in battle are called Seraphic Artes and are best described as geokinesis-- manipulating rock, dirt, and sand in her attacks. This means she can hurl rocks at enemies, create fissures in the earth or create sandstorms or earthquakes. She also uses this outside of battle to create a foundation for builders to work on a bridge; lifting rock and earth from the bottom of the river to give them a place to start from and speed up the repair process. However, she is also capable of combining other elements with Earth in order to create different effects. She is also able to combine Water and Earth to create snow-like powders and shoot projectiles made of ice or Wind and Earth to create voids and gravitational fields.
Aside from her Seraphic Artes, Edna also is capable of fighting with a "normal" weapon as well. For Seraphim, it is most effective for them to use a weapon who's element aligns with their weakness. So for her, that's water-- which is why her weapon is an umbrella. She jabs, stabs and beats her enemies down with it. She also opens it with a flourish to defend herself with style. Despite it seeming impractical; she'd very crafty with it. And while it's not the strongest physical weapon, her strength helps turn it into a formidable one. But her Seraphic Artes and casting abilities are still far superior.

AU NAME: Adalina "Ada" Stewart-Hale
AU AGE: 18
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Her hair is now a pale blond, without the dark orange fade at the tips that is typical of Seraphim.
AU HISTORY:
Born New York City, Adalina is the second daughter of one hell of a power couple. Her mother is an incredibly successful business mogul and her father is an investment banker. Just like her older sister Ava Stewart, when she was born, her family had a lot of high expectations for her from a very young age. And as a child she proved to be everything her mother could have hoped for. She was a cute, well-behaved and intelligent child that she was able to train just as she had Ava. In fact, as she grew, it became clear that she had certain talents that her sister lacked. The camera loved her, and she was a perfect model for a number of commercials and and product ads.
When it came time for her schooling to begin, she went to Recolle under the care of a wealthy business associate of her mother's, helping her mother's work expand to other cities. She was busier than any child had any right to be but the Hale family treated her like one of their own; in a more familial way than her own. It was during this time that Ada began to realize that the lessons she was learning that she didn't want to follow in her mother's example. She still traveled regularly back to New York, but this allowed her mother to focus more on Ava's development while she was, her mother was assured, in good hands.
She was able to excel in dance very early on; continuing to be one of the best in her class year after year. And she never grew out of her childish cuteness, which made her perfect for modeling and other advertising opportunities. During that time, she was very close to her sister; learning from her and being watched over by her. And Adalina tried faithfully to learn from her.
Unfortunately, as Adalina grew older, she started to branch off from the path that her mother had put her on, much to their frustration. Despite their constant struggles with her, she became someone they could no longer expect to do as she was told. She quit going to her dance classes. Instead, she took up a hobby they absolutely hated: playing video games. While a lot of her other hobbies were on and off due to changes in her own focuses and interests changing so often, this was one thing she continued to love. Despite taking a lot of the blame for Adalina's failures, the Hale family continued to support her.
Her defiance wasn't an act of hatred, but one of a girl who was struggling to find her own freedom. Much sooner than her sister, she knew she'd never be happy living the life her family wanted to put her in and so she rebelled against it. The family motto of “Nothing is free in the world, not even affection; you must earn it first" was something she just couldn't accept. If getting someone's love meant being someone she wasn't, then she was just fine without being loved. It didn't mean she stopped loving her ridiculous family. They frustrate the hell out of her, but they're still her family.
But once she stepped off that path, her relationship with her sister changed. They weren't close the way they used to be. Ava was still trying to follow the life that their parents expected of her, while Adalina was quickly fighting to establish her own way of life. She was still there for her when she needed it, but she also wouldn't lie and say she wasn't irritated with the life Ava was putting up with. In some ways she admired her strength, and in others she just wished she'd stand up for herself and stop letting them drag her down.
She still had a certain kind of hunger. She enjoyed trying different things-- acting, aikido, karate, music, art-- she studied them all at one point. But her interests would shift and she'd move on to something else. But her skills allowed her to maintain a decent level of skill in each of them, without ever mastering any of them.
Her main priority was her friendships. Making time to spend with them was the most important thing. Whether it was going to movies or shopping-- she surrounded herself with people. To her that was the greatest thing.
Knowing what she did of her mother and her sister, she was very surprised when Ava came to Recolle. By that time, she'd just moved into her own tiny apartment close to the Hale family and Recolle High. Proud of her for taking that step, she figured it was a good time to try and rekindle some of the closeness they used to share when they were little.
AU PERSONALITY: In this life, rather than spending hundreds of years alone, she's been supported and surrounded by friends all of her life. As a result, she's far less bitter, much more socially adapted and relies on people, instead of taking everything on alone. As a result she's not quite as mature or self-sufficient but she is more open and friendly. Her core traits of enjoying mischief and teasing the people she cares about remain untouched, but the latter is probably a bit easier to recognize for what it is.
In canon, her brother's choices resulted in a lot of her more self destructive personality traits. Most noticeably, her apathetic act. By keeping people at arm's length she tried to avoid getting hurt by letting people become too important. In her life now, she's built a lot of strong relationships and lets them in. Which results in her openly showing more concern for others as well as general emotional behavior. She doesn't feel like she has to act like things don't bother her and instead wears that sort of thing very openly on her sleeve. She still plays it cool at times and jokes around in that fashion-- but it's just that. A joke. Not the mask that it is for her canon self.
She also doesn't have to cling to the acceptance of others to make her happy. Where in canon she actively disliked the idea of being left out or undervalued, in this life she's far more comfortable with herself. There are people that like her for who she is and there are probably a good number that don't. But she's grown capable of loving herself the way she is without anyone's affirmation thanks to the conflict with her family in this universe.
